The Blackline helical LSD’s are torque biasing, that is they distribute torque between the wheels, loading more torque towards the wheel with the best traction thus improving performance and driveabitily. Especially in low grip situations. The helical gearing manages the distribution of friction within the LSD. When torque is applied to the helical gear system it creates force that pushes the gear into the differential body, thus creating friction. Increases of torque, increases the thrust force directly proportional to the amount of torque. This allows the Blackline LSD to cope with considerable traction imbalance even under heavy power conditions, as would be the case on exiting a powered up corner. But at low torque conditions the LSD can differentiate quietly and smoothly, thus making the differential very suitable for normal road driving. The Blackline LSD uses the popular parallel axis helical geared configuration optimised for even load distribution. They are designed with a torque bias of 5:1 this means that if one wheel loses traction then the wheel with the most grip can receive five times as much torque as the wheel that is slipping. However, five times zero is still zero, so all these helical LSD’s work best when both wheels are’planted’ and some traction is still available on the slipping wheel. In practice this is rarely a problem as there is always some’drag’ on the slipping wheel, however some drivers expertly use left foot braking to partially lock the spinning wheel. Helical LSD’s work especially well when combined with modern anti-lock braking systems. Applies equal rotational speed to both wheels. Distributes torque according to available traction. Minimum servicing compared to plate type LSD’s. Controlled power on launches and drifting slides. Optimum gear tooth design and oil distribution. Gears and Body Manufactured from 8620 material. Direct replacement for stock differential. This is a Torque Biasing Helical Gear LSD. These are generally regarded as a nicer road LSD as they have little side effects during normal driving (unlike plate type LSD’s that constantly resist differing wheels speeds during cornering) They do not require a special oil. We recommend that the axle oil is changed after the first 500 miles as initially they can create swarf – this is normal and will reduce with use. Genuine BMW Rear Differential. 3.15 Ratio LSD. Supplied with no oil. Calling all Owners Next Generation M5/M6 Owners! Another production 1st from Gearlab. A must for any big powered M5 or M6 owners! After months in development we now have two completed M5 and M6 Bigger bearing upgraded differentials. As well as a lack of lubrication to the cone bearings they become very problematic and start failing, a modification is now implemented to allow more oil to the bearings. The Modified bearings are setup in house and to GearLabs own specific tolerances. Due to the current high demands of more fuel efficient, weight saving and more cost effective components. Manufactures are now creating inferior and less robust designs to there precursor. The protection of designs and production of all parts within the Differential, becoming more valuable rather than the engineering, robustness and applications to which they are being built for. The LSD on these specific Differentials have a life span of around 100k miles typically, dependent on application and maintenance etc. Once this kind of mileage is reached, you generally find that the GKN is ready for rebuilding. A Remanufacted Differential is not a simple bearing and seal change, dont get caught out, as many do. We provide the highest quality Remanufacted genuine BMW differentials. The differentials are reconditioned with genuine OE components, fully stripped down, cleaned using our in house ultrasonic cleaner, Pinion depth, tolerances, preload, backlash, contact mesh checked along with all new seals, and non consumables replaced. New molybdenum ceramic clutch pack and visco pump rebuilt. Currently and one of very few companies in the UK – possibly the only one – able to offer this upgrade. We have many options in respect to mods, up rated / improved parts, and processes implemented. So you can feel rest asssuered that you are purchasing a quality engineered component. The workmanship and attention to detail that goes into one of our Differential builds is bar non you will not find any corners cut here. We pride our selves on our Differentials not only internal but external and guarantee our Units for 12 months. All my Differential are built by my self by hand in house every part is scrutinized and inspected and nothing is left to chance. My Differential are fully reconditioned units which means all serviceable parts are replaced. I find my self more and more repairing Differentials that have apparently been reconditioned months prior to find out that all that may have been changed is the absolute minimum or nothing at all. All preload shims custom ground in house to a 1 micron tolerance. A properly rebuilt automotive part. Rebuild includes full strip and cleaning of internal oiling system, with modifications to increase oil flow. The item has been completely disassembled, cleaned and examined for wear and breakage. Worn out, missing or non-functioning components have been replaced with new or rebuilt components. It is the functional equivalent of a new part and is virtually indistinguishable from a new part. We’ll also guarantee our work for 1 years, or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) on fitted Differential, 6 months / 6,000 miles on’take-away’ units and 3 months for all auxiliary parts. The old Differential needs to be unmolested and serviceable, what this means is that the Differential needs to come complete not stripped or dismantled, and must have no holes or damage to the case. If your Differential is leaking oil from the case or has no drive, then its safe to say that the Differential is most likely non serviceable. Once the new Differential has been received simply refrain all packaging and securing fixings, these will assist you when returning the old Differential. This can be extended considerably if the Differential is a bespoke item and requires a build slot. Our workshop hours are 9.00am – 6.00pm Monday – Friday and 9.00am – 1pm Saturday.

The standard “open” differential is ideal in most factory cars, but is far from ideal for getting the best out of your car. It will always transmit the same amount of torque to both wheels – ideal whilst both wheels have 100% grip as they both have 100% of the torque that the engine is delivering too them. But, put one of those wheels in a situation where it can slip – for example on some ice – if it only took a tiny amount of torque to make that wheel turn, exactly the same amount of power would be sent to the wheel that isn’t on ice. Hence why you’ll get one wheel spinning and one not doing anything. The same theory can be applied to cornering. As the weight of the vehicle is transferred and the tyre on the inside begins to be lifted off of the ground, the amount of engine power required to make it turn is significantly reduced and so the amount of power sent to the outside “loaded” wheel, will be exactly the same. At which point, it wouldn’t matter if you had 50bhp or 500bhp, as none of it would be getting to the wheel with any grip. To get around this an LSD can be fitted. A LSD, or limited slip diff, does as it says on the tin – limits the amount of slip of that inside wheel. It does this by essentially transferring torque directly from the housing to the side gears and thus bypassing the actually differential bevel gears. Whether it’s by the traditional method of “clutch plates”, or the more contemporary method of an additional set of bevel gears, the end result is essentially the same. With this conversion set, you will gain the true performance of a proper limited slip differential. This kit does not require any machine work to each spider gear luke the earlier version. All parts are made in the N7 quality standard. Instructions provided with kit. Professional installation is required. Use oil for limited slip differentials ONLY once fitted. For friction shims, we use the same material as OEM LSD clutches to avoid metal shredding. Therefore, shims are perfectly safe for long term usage! Preload is provided with high rate springs, and we get a dynamic lock from 37.5° angled ramps. All of this together gives 25% progressive lock which increases with revs and vice versa. The set is made from extremely strong s6 tool steel. Parts are heat-treated and hardened to 40HRC under the protection of argon to avoid deformation.
