Why Choose a 3J Driveline NXG Performance LSD? The NXG Plate-type limited slip differential is designed, manufactured and assembled right here in the UK. It has been engineered to be the strongest, most progressive and versatile LSD unit in the market place today. The NXG Performance bevel and planet gear pack, with its big, strong tooth profile, gives not only a smooth mesh, it also all but eliminates the rattle and excessive back lash often associated with plate-type LSD’s. The standard “open” differential is ideal in most factory cars, but is far from ideal for getting the best out of your car. It will always transmit the same amount of torque to both wheels – ideal whilst both wheels have 100% grip as they both have 100% of the torque that the engine is delivering too them. But, put one of those wheels in a situation where it can slip – for example on some ice – if it only took a tiny amount of torque to make that wheel turn, exactly the same amount of power would be sent to the wheel that isn’t on ice. Hence why you’ll get one wheel spinning and one not doing anything. The same theory can be applied to cornering. As the weight of the vehicle is transferred and the tyre on the inside begins to be lifted off of the ground, the amount of engine power required to make it turn is significantly reduced and so the amount of power sent to the outside “loaded” wheel, will be exactly the same. At which point, it wouldn’t matter if you had 50bhp or 500bhp, as none of it would be getting to the wheel with any grip. To get around this an LSD can be fitted. A LSD, or limited slip diff, does as it says on the tin – limits the amount of slip of that inside wheel. It does this by essentially transferring torque directly from the housing to the side gears and thus bypassing the actually differential bevel gears. Whether it’s by the traditional method of “clutch plates”, or the more contemporary method of an additional set of bevel gears, the end result is essentially the same. The Blackline helical LSD’s are torque biasing, that is they distribute torque between the wheels, loading more torque towards the wheel with the best traction thus improving performance and driveabitily. Especially in low grip situations. The helical gearing manages the distribution of friction within the LSD. When torque is applied to the helical gear system it creates force that pushes the gear into the differential body, thus creating friction. Increases of torque, increases the thrust force directly proportional to the amount of torque. This allows the Blackline LSD to cope with considerable traction imbalance even under heavy power conditions, as would be the case on exiting a powered up corner. But at low torque conditions the LSD can differentiate quietly and smoothly, thus making the differential very suitable for normal road driving. The Blackline LSD uses the popular parallel axis helical geared configuration optimised for even load distribution. They are designed with a torque bias of 5:1 this means that if one wheel loses traction then the wheel with the most grip can receive five times as much torque as the wheel that is slipping. However, five times zero is still zero, so all these helical LSD’s work best when both wheels are’planted’ and some traction is still available on the slipping wheel. In practice this is rarely a problem as there is always some’drag’ on the slipping wheel, however some drivers expertly use left foot braking to partially lock the spinning wheel. Helical LSD’s work especially well when combined with modern anti-lock braking systems. Applies equal rotational speed to both wheels. Distributes torque according to available traction. Minimum servicing compared to plate type LSD’s. Controlled power on launches and drifting slides. Optimum gear tooth design and oil distribution. Gears and Body Manufactured from 8620 material. Direct replacement for stock differential. This is a Torque Biasing Helical Gear LSD. These are generally regarded as a nicer road LSD as they have little side effects during normal driving (unlike plate type LSD’s that constantly resist differing wheels speeds during cornering) They do not require a special oil.
